About us.

On October the 2nd the project in Jamaica will set off. We're three volunteers: Aneta, Natalia and Roma, three doctors who are representing Krakow, Bialystok and Dębica in Poland. We're going on behalf of the Polish Medical Mission to support the poorest regions of Jamaica. Our project has been recognized as part of the government's program supporting Countries of the Global South.
Our main motivation is desire to help and support intercultural equality, and in the place where we're going there is no medical care, no physician, to who you can come for a visit in case of emergency or illness, there is no basic diagnostic equipment and the locals can not afford to purchase medicines.
In the country full of colors, under the cloud of positive music and warm, smiling people, hides enormous poverty, neglects and spreading diseases and all that is carefully hidden from the eyes of tourists visiting the "paradise" ...
We believe that healthy society is a society that gives hope for the development of the country. The high rate of unemployment and illiteracy does not facilitate access to basic health knowledge, and difficult economic situation of local people makes it impossible to obtain medical treatment in far away cities.
Our project is a continuation of activities taken place one and two years ago, after which progress was noted. We want to enhance the awareness and influence health behaviors of the local people.

In the part of Jamaica where we're going there is Catholic Mission of Father Marek Bzinkowski and Servants of the Sacred Heart of Jesus "Holy Spirit" in Maggotty. Although the majority of our work will be taken place in the nearby Santa Cruz, which is now in a much worse situation. When you look on the pictures on the right you will see small orange building- that's gonna be our place to work. Sister Patricia (also visible on the pictures) is taking care of it.
So within a month and the half we will be there treating and educating local people ...

Few words about Jamaica.

You've heard of Jamaica, right?
That's this small, beautiful island in the Caribbean sea, between North and South America, where sun shines all year around, where are amazing beaches, 5-star hotels, delicious fruits, and all around positive reggee music is played and where people are smiling.
Those are Ziggy Marley's (son of Bob) words, which capture prefectly soul of Jamaicans:
When people come to Jamaica, we don't want them to think about the problems of Jamaica.
So let them come be in their paradise.

Island has a long and sad history. Since 1494 r. and spanish colonization, natives started to die off because of diseases and slavery overwork. Colonizers were forced to capture and bring people of Africa to work in sugar plantations. Jamaica has long history of pirates and privateers, who found safe harbour in Port Royal. In XVII century island was conquered by the English, and became centre of producing sugarcane and the slave trade. In the middle of XIX century slavery was finally abolished. According to location, during history of Jamaica, there were several severe earthquakes, tsunamis and hurricanes. Finally since 1962 Jamaica is independent country, but still faces many problems and is on the list of Countries Of The Global South.
Jamaican motto:
Out of Many, One People.

And do you know what language is spoken in Jamaica? No, it's not Englisk, It's Jamaican! In other words- Patois or Patwa, it's the language coming from English mixed with Akan (Ghana) and Bantu (Nigeria-Congo). We will give more details according to this matter as soon as we get there... :)
